The Heart of Mimmù: How Our Handmade Shoes Are Born
There’s a question we often receive, via DM, email, and from stores, that warms our hearts every time: “Are your shoes really handmade?” The answer is yes.
In this article, we want to tell you exactly how, because behind every pair of handcrafted women’s shoes Made in Italy signed Mimmù, there’s much more than what meets the eye.
Get comfortable, maybe with a coffee. We’re taking you to our workshop.
It all starts with the leather: the raw material that makes the difference
Even before a craftsman picks up the tools, everything begins with the choice of high-quality leather for handcrafted footwear. At Mimmù, we work exclusively with certified Italian tanneries, mainly in Tuscany and the Brenta district, two of the most important hubs worldwide for Made in Italy leather tanning and the production of premium materials for handcrafted shoes.
What do we look for in leather? Three things:
- Consistency: it must be uniform, without imperfections or unusual grain patterns.
- Softness: because a beautiful shoe that’s uncomfortable isn’t a shoe, it’s a punishment.
- Character: yes, leathers have personality. And we respect that.
Each season, we select our palette of materials with obsessive care; this is where the difference between handcrafted women’s shoes and an industrial product is born. In our collection, you’ll find full-grain leather, nubuck, and fine suede: genuine materials that age beautifully and tell stories.
The design: where fashion meets shoemaking craftsmanship
Every Mimmù model starts from a sketch. It may sound simple, but it’s not at all: our creative process always begins with a straightforward question—what does a real woman need in her everyday life?
Our designers work closely with master artisans from the very first phase: no project exists only on paper. Every line takes into account how the leather will behave, how much the heel will support posture, where more structure is needed, and where it can “breathe.”
Then comes the ultimate test: the prototype. It’s worn, tested, discussed, and modified. Sometimes three times, sometimes ten. Until we all say together: here it is, this is a Mimmù shoe.
The hands that work: the heart of the craftsmanship
This is the part we love to tell. In our Italian handcrafted shoe workshop, every pair passes through the expert hands of artisans with years, often decades, of experience in producing handcrafted Made in Italy footwear.
The main stages of the process show what it really means to create high-quality handcrafted shoes:
- Cutting the natural leather: the leather for handcrafted shoes is cut following the patterns, piece by piece, respecting the natural shape of the hide. This ensures strength and durability over time.
- Hand finishing the edges: the edges are finished by hand to prevent fraying and ensure greater longevity, a key element in handmade shoes in Italy.
- Upper assembly: the upper is shaped on the last; this is where the shoe comes to life, defining fit and comfort in handcrafted women’s footwear.
- Quality stitching (Blake and Goodyear): stitch by stitch, with strong thread and precise technique. No glue can compete with Blake or Goodyear stitching, synonymous with durable and repairable handcrafted shoes.
- Finishing and quality control: polishing, thorough inspection, and attention to final details—what sets a Made in Italy handcrafted shoe apart from an industrial product.
The result? A comfortable and durable handcrafted shoe that adapts to your foot over time, not one that forces you to adapt to it.
Why choose handcrafted women’s shoes Made in Italy (and not the usual fast fashion)
We know, we know: fast fashion shoes cost less. But what do they really cost?
A handcrafted shoe lasts for years. It can be resoled, refreshed, repaired. It has a value that’s passed down, literally, as anyone who has inherited their grandmother’s shoes and found them still in great shape knows. An industrial shoe lasts one season, sometimes less, and then ends up in the landfill.
At Mimmù, we believe that buying less and buying well is the smartest choice—for your wardrobe, for your wallet in the long run, and for the planet. And that’s exactly why every model in our collection is designed to be loved for a long time.
From the workshop to the world: the story of Mimmù
Mimmù was born from a love for well-made beauty. A small project at first, like all meaningful stories, grown thanks to women who chose to invest in quality rather than quantity.
Today we are here, with a collection that includes ballet flats, sandals, and handcrafted ankle boots, all made in Italy with the same values as always: care, honesty, authentic beauty.
Because, in the end, a beautiful and well-made shoe is not a luxury. It’s an act of love towards yourself.
